History of Mosspaul

Mosspaul is a building of local historic interest and nestles below the hills in the Teviotdale valley. The site of Mosspaul has been occupied for centuries, originally in Medieval times by a monastery dedicated to St. Paul, from where Mosspaul derives it's name - The Moss (ground) of St. Paul.

In the 1700's the original Mosspaul was built and soon became a busy coaching Inn, until the 1860's when trade declined due to the advent of the railway which by- passed the valley. The Inn subsequently closed and became a private dwelling for 10 years until it was destroyed by fire.

The existing building dates from 1900. Mosspaul was rebuilt largely to service the increasing number of cyclists who rode out to Mosspaul.

There have been ten licensees since 1900 the present being ourselves, Steve and Elaine Smith. We took over ownership of Mosspaul at the end of July 2002. Since taking over we have embarked on a comprehensive scheme of refurbishment.

We are both early retired professionals who sought a lifestyle change. Steve was a lawyer and Elaine was a teacher, and more latterly an Educational Psychologist.
